Bavuma Opens Up on Watching the Ashes
South African captain Temba Bavuma let his guard down and expressed a rare emotional moment after watching the opening day of the Ashes between Australia and England being played in Perth. Bavuma admitted that he and his teammates felt a sense of “jealousy” watching both sides compete in a five-match Test series, while South Africa, the reigning World Test Champions, are set to play just two Tests against India.
“We woke up this morning to watch the Ashes. We watched with a bit of jealousy, knowing that they were playing five Tests… They’ll be going at each other,” Bavuma said.
The captain was clearly unimpressed that the best teams in world cricket don’t receive the full red-ball treatment, especially after South Africa lifted the WTC crown earlier this year.
Does a Two-Test Series Do Justice to SA vs India?
Bavuma emphasized that the upcoming India vs South Africa Test series feels “too short for a contest between two of the strongest red-ball teams in the world.”
With highly anticipated matchups such as Ind vs SA, Ind SA Test, and India vs South Africa today match live, fans worldwide expected a longer series similar to The Ashes.
The South Africa skipper believes a proper contest should span five Tests, especially when the cricketing world recognizes the two-nation rivalry as a premier red-ball battle.
Hope” – Bavuma’s Powerful Message on Name-Calling
The South African captain also shared an emotional personal story from his life, especially regarding the names he’s been called over the years.
“I have been called a lot of names in my life, some names hurt (choker, quota, bauna). But the name I’ve been called the most is Temba. My grandma named me Temba because it means ‘Hope’, hope for our community.”
Bavuma’s statement shed light on his resilience, identity, and the inspiration he draws from his roots. For him, cricket is not just a performance scoreboard but an extension of representation, pride, and responsibility.
Bavuma Could Create History in India
The upcoming India tour carries significant historical importance for the South African captain. If Temba Bavuma wins a Test series in India, he will become only the second SA captain in 25 years to achieve this milestone. 25 years have passed since South Africa last secured a Test series win in India.
With Bavuma already crowned World Test Champion, this tour could cement his name among the greatest red-ball leaders of South Africa.Eyes on IND vs SA — Test Cricket Deserves More
